Environmental initiatives

As a responsible member of society and faced with the crucial challenge of protecting the global environment, we seek to play an active role in maintaining people’s health and protecting the global environment through all of our business activities. We aim to achieve a sustainable society by contributing to sustainable development through our activities.

Business activity domains

In order to reduce our impact on the environment in our business activities, we promote activities in six of the seven domains (excluding product development) set out in “The Seven Domains of Honda Business Activities,” a Honda lifecycle philosophy which assesses the environmental impact of a product through its whole life.

Initiatives in the field of administration

Product resource cycle and 3R efforts

We recycle waste resources collected from manufacturing processes and end-of-life vehicles in every conceivable materials field, including iron, resin and non-ferrous metals.

For example, aluminum is melted at Group company aluminum plants and reused as a material at Honda plants. In the field of resin, since 2007 we have worked alongside Honda to turn bumpers from end-of-life vehicles back into recycled polypropylene (PP) resin.

Initiatives in the field of purchasing

As a Honda Group company, we take part in Honda Green Purchasing Activities, through which we procure materials and parts that have small environmental footprints, including matters related to chemical substances.

These activities are based on Honda’s guidelines, and we purchase items, considering environmental burden reduction in all stages of a part’s lifecycle. We also promote the management of chemical substances, which have particularly detailed regulations, in line with Honda’s management standards.

Initiatives in the field of production

Honda Group manufacturing subsidiaries work hard to minimize environmental impact by implementing measures in power saving, resource saving and zero emissions.

Aluminum manufacturing Group companies especially contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by reducing the standard double aluminum melting process to a single process and supplying aluminum to manufacturing lines in its molten state.

Initiatives in the field of transportation

We carry out CO2 emissions management in the transportation (within the scope of transporter responsibility), and help to improve the efficiency of transportation in cooperation with transport companies.

In order to improve transportation efficiency, we propose the most appropriate logistics across different business operations, and propose modal shifts* to promote use of the closest ports and the prioritization of highly-efficient ocean freight. We actively promote the reduction of waste materials through simple and basic packaging, and the use of returnable packaging containers (materials).

* Modal shift: A shift towards transportation and means of transportation with a low impact on the environment.

Initiatives in the field of sales

We transform used engine oil that was replaced by customers at dealers into recycled heavy oil through refining, and use it as fuel during alloy manufacturing. This enables us to reduce petrol consumption.

Initiatives in the field of office administration

Considering environmental issues in all business activities, we are implementing thorough environmental improvement activities to promote “green offices” that protect the global environment.

We pay careful attention to environmental impact in our surroundings or in our everyday work, and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions through energy saving, including electricity conservation, and resource saving by promoting paperless measures and reducing waste.

Honda Trading is a leading contributor to Honda's worldwide environmental efforts through its innovative and efficient recycling programs, recycling material obtained through many of Honda's manufacturing processes, such as stamping, casting, machining and molding.

Honda Trading recycles aluminum, ferrous, plastic and magnesium scrap, as well as catalytic materials (platinum group metals). Honda Trading recycled materials are used internally for Honda parts and materials and are also sold on the open market. As new processes and opportunities evolve, Honda Trading continues to seek new innovations to gain efficiencies and be a leader in recycling efforts for Honda, its suppliers, the automotive industry and the world.

Honda's recycling processes:Honda Trading recycled materials are used internally for Honda parts and materials and are also sold on the open market. As evidenced in the graphic below, the "strategic flow" of Honda's closed loop recycling process allows Honda Trading to provide customers with:

  • Cost benefits;
  • Verified weight and price; and
  • Secured and consistent materials.
